NALP Releases Positive Attorney Jobs Report

NALP recently released its "Selected Findings from the Employment Report and Salary Survey for the Class of 2014."

The good news:
  • the employment rate for 2014 graduates rose over 2 percentage points compared to the class of 2013, the first increase since 2007
  • the percentage of employed gradutes in JD required or JD Advantage jobs also increased
The bad news:
  • the actual number of jobs obtained by the class of 2014 was actually smaller than that in 2013;  the smaller graduating class size accounted for the increased employment rate
  • because the ABA shifted the "as of" reporting date from Feb. 15 to March 15, these results may slightly overstate the success of graduates compared with 2013
The future:
  • with class sizes continuing to decline, the percentage of graduates finding employment should continue to rise, as long as there is not a setback in the slowly recovering job market
I'll take the good news. With LSAT takers up and a positive jobs report, it's a nice change of pace from the law-school news of last 5 years or so.

AALL/LexisNexis Call for Papers 2019-2020 Now Open!

US News Scholarship Impact Issues

In spring 2017, I briefly discussed the issues  with scholarship impact factor in law as a response to a recommendation by a law professor to create a rankings methodology based on Google Scholar citation. Now US News is trying to get in the game of creating a ranking of law faculty by scholarship impact factor using Hein publication metrics. US News is asking each law school for the names and other details of its fall 2018 full-time tenured and tenure-track faculty. US News plans to link the names of each individual law school's faculty to citations and publications that were published in the previous five years and are available in HeinOnline. Using this data, HeinOnline will compile faculty scholarly impact indicators for each law school . This will include such measures as mean citations per faculty member, median citations per faculty member, and total number of publications.
